Boris Herrmann and Team Malizia take to the water again at Kiel Week

Boris Herrmann was back on the water in September for the first time since his impressive 5th place finish at the Vendée Globe. Sailing in front of an enthusiastic home crowd at Kiel Week, Germany’s most famous annual sailing regatta, he took part in the welcome race on Team Malizia’s CG 32 catamaran alongside German Olympic sailor Susann Beucke, fresh from her silver medal winning performance at Tokyo 2020.

Boris Herrmann and Team Malizia also unveiled their ambitious five-year campaign, which sees them compete in two of the most famous ‘round the world’ races, the Ocean Race in 2022/23 and the tenth anniversary edition of the Vendée Globe in 2024/25.

Critical to their success is a new flagship IMOCA racing yacht, currently under construction in France. Following a ground-breaking and fully sustainable design process which pushes the boundaries of technology and innovation, the team will embark on an intense testing phase before finally revealing the new boat to the public on 19 July 2022.

In line with their scientific mission to find a solution to ocean and climate change ‘a race we must win,’ the boat’s construction drives forward a commitment to use sustainable materials and environmentally friendly technologies. The latest developments were on show at the regatta, including an electric powerboat that reaches speeds of 30 knots.

At the event, Boris Herrmann commented “we are very aware of how demanding and ambitious our plans are, but that is exactly what motivates us to strive for top performance in all areas. We have very good, strong support from our partners, and we don’t have to make compromises”.

To leave a positive legacy, Boris Herrmann and Team Malizia set up ‘My Ocean Challenge’, a fun initiative that uses their sailing adventures to educate and inspire future generations about climate change and ocean health, in line with their mission. Local children got the chance to meet the team and visit the dedicated marine laboratory, which sends valuable data directly back from some of the remotest parts of the world to a team of scientists.

We are proud to be an Official Partner, on board for the duration of the five-year campaign. Over the course of their journey, Boris Herrmann and Team Malizia’s will compete in some of the most challenging and iconic races in sailing, which takes immense strength of character, leadership and teamwork, all attributes we aspire to share here at EFG. Also, with their scientific mission to find solutions to ocean and climate change they will continue to raise awareness for sustainability issues around the globe.
