Game, set and match Gstaad!

The second year of our partnership with the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad was once again considered a great success. This year, the flagship tournament set against the backdrop of the Swiss Alps, ran from 15-23 July 2023. A week of outstanding tennis culminated in a sold out final, which produced a surprise winner, as well as some homegrown success in the final of the men’s doubles match.

The singles final was a close three set affair, with Argentinian Pedro Cachin conquering early nerves to come back from a set down and claim his first ever ATP title, beating the 2019 champion, Spain’s Albert Ramos-Viñolas, 3-6, 6-0, 7-5. The hard-fought victory means Cachin has broken into the ATP Top 50 rankings for the very first time.

The enthusiastic home crowd also had something to cheer about after the final when local favourites Triple Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka and young Bernese talent Dominic Stricker claimed the men’s doubles title, upsetting the top ranked pair Marcelo Demoliner and Matwe Middelkoop, 7-6, 6-2. At the start of the week, Stricker and Wawrinka had only played one tour-level match together, but the two Swiss stars flourished on home soil, resulting in Wawrinka’s first doubles title in more than a decade and Stricker’s first ATP Tour crown.

Giorgio Pradelli, CEO, EFG International said: “Once again, we have witnessed a spectacular week of tennis in this stunning location, with a strong line-up of players that included representation from the exciting generation of talent emerging on the men’s circuit. One of the things we most admire about the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad is their ability to connect the champions of today with the stars of tomorrow, and we saw an embodiment of that in this year’s men’s doubles final”.

The future of men’s tennis looks very bright indeed and we would like to thank everyone involved in making the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad such a hit, all the competitors, the organisers and everyone who attended the tournament across the week.
