January FOMC meeting

The January 2024 Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting was accompanied by large market movements. US equities sold off sharply - the S&P500 index was down 1.6% - and Treasuries rallied as the yield on the 10-year US government bond fell by around 12bps on the day. This was despite the fact that the Federal Reserve delivered a message that was only slightly more hawkish than the market had hoped for. As widely expected, at its meeting on 29 January, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) decided to leave policy unchanged for the third straight time. Policy will thus continue to aim for a gradual strengthening of the Singapore dollar to reduce import prices and lower inflation.
