On 11 August 2016, the EFG-sponsored Swiss lightweight rowing four were crowned as Olympic champions in Rio.
EFG has sponsored the Swiss lightweight project since 2011. This partnership has allowed the athletes - Mario Gyr, Simon Niepmann, Simon Schürch and Lucas Tramèr - to focus on their elite sporting ambitions. It was inspired by the team’s enthusiasm and determination, a strong competitive track record, and an appreciation for the dynamics and precision of rowing. The strong personal relationship between the athletes and their coach, Ian Wright, whom they rely on in competitions and training sessions, also mirrored the relationship between EFG and its clients.
The results have been outstanding. The team are the current World and European Champions, as well as Overall World Cup Winners 2015. Central to the project, however, has been the team’s journey through two Olympic cycles. The team achieved fifth place in London 2012 and, after four more years of intensive preparation, all the hard work paid off with Olympic gold at Rio 2016. On 11 August, the Swiss lightweight rowing four were crowned as Olympic champions having won the final in 6 minutes 20.51 seconds, ahead of Denmark and France.
This has been an outstanding partnership based on hard work, talent and dedication to excellence. Our congratulations to the whole team, their coaches and the Swiss Rowing Federation for this crowning Olympic success.
